Toes are tapping at Kandahar Home

Sounds of ABBA, Elvis and Billie Holiday are likely to be heard from Enliven’s Kandahar Home in Masterton on Wednesday and Friday afternoons.

This year the home introduced a pre-dinner drinks and nibbles hour after an idea from the team was supported by the residents.

Residents, their family, volunteers and staff are all welcome to drop in for an informal chat over a whiskey or a wine, and if the mood takes them, a boogie to some classic tracks.

Kandahar Home Manager Peter Newman says he started bringing his phone complete with Spotify along to the sessions and taking song requests from the residents.

“It’s a really cool informal social occasion.

“We’re replicating the types of things that the residents would have done at home – have a drink and a snack in the afternoon.”

He says songs by ABBA are usually on high rotation. Elvis is also a popular choice, and Billie Holiday.

The pre-dinner session, informally dubbed “happy hour”, was initially held only on a Friday but has been extended to Wednesday afternoons as well due to its popularity.

Enliven’s Kandahar Home in Lansdowne, Masterton offers rest home and hospital care, while nearby Kandahar Court offers secure dementia care. For more information visit www.enlivencentral.org.nz or call the friendly team on 06 370 0447.
