Harold keeps busy in Coombrae Home garden

Coombrae Home resident Harold Pearpoint loves spending time in the garden.

Gardening is a big passion for Harold Pearpoint, and it is a hobby he has continued since moving into Enliven’s Coombrae Home.

“My wife and I were both very keen gardeners,” he says.

“We had a big section in Feilding which I miss, but being able to do a bit of gardening here helps.”

The staff are supportive of residents to continue their interests once they move into Coombrae Home. It’s all part of Enliven’s philosophy which recognises that people need to maintain control over their lives, wherever they live and whatever their age.

“Enliven elders are encouraged to maintain connections with nature, the community and people of all ages. They’re supported to give as well as receive care as part of living a purposeful life,” says Coombrae Home and Village manager Stephen Prabhakaran.

Before Christmas Harold was busy tending to sunflower and swan plant seedlings before they were planted in the Feilding rest home’s garden.

As well as flowers, Harold helps tend to Coombrae Home’s vege garden. Once the vegetables are ready to harvest, they are sent to the kitchen and used in meals for the residents.

Harold has also continued another interest – duck shooting – and goes out locally with his son and grandson during duck shooting season.

Enliven’s Coombrae Home and Village, located on North Street in Feilding, offers independent retirement villas, rest home and dementia care, short-term respite, as well as a day programme. To learn more about the home, call the friendly team on 06 323 4491.
