More than a Day Out

For many older people, the days can start to feel a little quieter than they used to. Familiar routines change, getting out and about safely becomes harder, and the simple pleasure of spending time with others can fade away.

The Riddiford Club Day Support programme, based in Woburn, Lower Hutt, was created to change that - bringing older people together, and keeping their interests, energy, and sense of fun firmly intact.

From Monday to Friday, 10am to 3pm, the Club offers a warm, relaxed space where participants can get out of the house, enjoy some company, and have a really good time, while giving family carers a well-earned break.

Underpinned by Enliven's positive ageing philosophy, it is built around what genuinely matters to older people: companionship, meaningful activity, fun, and the confidence to stay independent for longer. Every day brings something different: a game of bowls, a sewing project, gentle movement, live music, a themed party, or an outing into the community.

Sessions are designed by diversional therapists and delivered by Enliven recreational staff and volunteers who keep things flexible and responsive to what the group feels like doing that day.

There's real attention to the kind of stimulation that supports wellbeing too - cognitive and sensory activities, shared meals, and social connection that goes beyond ‘just passing the time’. Purpose and community involvement are woven into the programme. It’s a rewarding combination!

It’s a great fit for people experiencing social isolation, or for those living with a family carer who could use some regular breathing room.

“The relief that comes from knowing your loved one is genuinely enjoying their day is something families say makes a real difference at home too,” says Riddiford Club Manager Noelette Matthews.

"Participants often tell us this feels like a home away from home," says Noelette. "Important moments are celebrated together - birthdays, Christmas, New Year, St Patrick's Day, Chinese New Year and more."

Regular attendee Peter agrees, “I love coming to Woburn’s Day Support Programme. The staff are friendly and invite you to do things like knitting, play word games, socialise with Bingo or bowls, that you might never have had the time or confidence to do. I love coming, it adds purpose to your days and brings fun opportunities to socialise and make new friends."

Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea are all provided, and transport can be arranged if needed (at an additional cost).

Costs can be covered privately, and subsidies are often available, so it's worth having a conversation about what might work for your situation.
