Take the Step

On 15 June, New Zealand marks World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, a reminder that abuse of older people is more common than many realise.

As many as 1 in 10 older New Zealanders will experience some form of elder abuse, yet many cases go unrecognised or unreported. Often, it is perpetrated by someone the older person knows and trusts.

This year's theme is Take the Step. You’re Not Alone.

If something doesn’t feel right, if someone is making you uncomfortable, or if you’re unsure where to turn - take the step. There are people who will listen and support you. People who care about your safety, your dignity, and your wellbeing. Reaching out is not a burden. It’s an act of strength. And when you do, we’ll walk with you, every step of the way.

At Enliven Central, we believe every older person deserves to live with dignity, respect, purpose, and freedom from harm. Our approach to care is guided by the Eden Alternative philosophy, and all staff are trained in its principles. These values emphasise person-directed care, meaningful relationships, independence, and ensuring older people feel safe, heard and valued.

Creating environments where people can thrive is not just about meeting physical needs; it is about protecting their rights, wellbeing, and sense of belonging.

If you are concerned about an older person, don't look away, Speak Up. A simple conversation, welfare check, or request for advice could make a big difference. Many older people experiencing abuse or neglect may feel isolated, embarrassed, or unsure where to turn for support.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is an opportunity for all of us to help build communities where older people are respected, protected, and empowered to live well.

If you are worried about the wellbeing of an older person, please support through Age Concern New Zealand (0800 65 2 105) or the Elder Abuse Helpline (0800 EA NOT OK / 0800 32 668 65) or text 5032
