Kandahar Home and Court Housekeeper Sandy Clegg loves interacting with the people she sees when she comes to work.
In the time she has worked at the Enliven home she has got to know many of the residents.
“If I’m not in their room cleaning, then I’m delivering their laundry,” she says. “They’re all so appreciative.”
“One of the residents loves to walk so I lend her my pedometer and I add up all the steps that she’s done that day!”
Sandy initially started working at Kandahar Home assisting with admin work on a six-month contract.
“When that time was up I was offered a cleaning job, and then I learned how to work in the laundry.
“When I was offered the senior housekeeper position I initially said no because I didn’t think I knew enough, but I was able to learn as I went.”
To help Sandy get up to speed with the roles, Enliven supported her to complete her Level 2 New Zealand Certificate in Cleaning. She is now working her way through Level 3 and after that plans to complete the New Zealand Certificate in Laundry Processing.
“I’ve been offered roles here I never would have thought about going for and I absolutely love it – I really enjoy my job,” she says.
“I get immense satisfaction from a job well done.”
As part of her role, Sandy looks after a team of around 10 cleaners and laundry workers who work at Kandahar Home and the nearby specialized dementia unit Kandahar Court.
