Kowhainui Home volunteer Tanya makes everyone feel special

Kowhainui Home volunteer Tanya Hughes helps out across the board.

Pet ambassador, administrator, promoter and keen crafter, Tanya Hughes has what it takes to be a much-loved volunteer.

Tanya started volunteering at Kowhainui Home in 2018 when health issues meant she couldn’t continue her job.

When the home began implementing a new resident database system, Tanya was instrumental in helping with the admin side of things.

“Tanya was invaluable,” says Kowhainui Home administrator Cathy Wylie. “We couldn’t have completed the task on time without her skills.”

When the administration work came to an end, Tanya moved to recreation and now supports the team by creating flyers and signs and supporting residents on various craft-based activities. She also sets up and oversees the stalls for the home’s large annual market day.

“Although Tanya suffers painful health issues that affect her mobility, she always turns up with a smile on her face,” says diversional therapist Donna Freeman. “When she had major arm surgery and couldn’t drive Tanya persuaded her family to drop her off here so she could keep us updated and maintain the connection with the residents.”

“I love coming to Kowhainui Home to volunteer,” Tanya says. “I love the people and I love the place. No two days are the same and I have a sense of purpose and belonging that I wouldn’t otherwise have.”

Enliven has more than 260 volunteers donating their time in its homes across the lower North Island. We are taking this time during National Volunteer Week to say thank you for their dedication.
