Kandahar Home residents enjoy trip to Lake Ferry

Kandahar Home residents enjoy a fish and chip lunch on a recent visit to Lake Ferry.

With summer just around the corner and the weather warming up, residents at Enliven’s Kandahar Home recently opted for a day trip to Lake Ferry.

Kandahar Home recreation officer Di says there have been fewer opportunities for residents to get out and about this year with the country moving in and out of different Covid-19 alert levels.

After the option of visiting Lake Ferry was suggested at one of the home’s regular resident meetings, Di says she checked the weather report.

“It just worked out to be a perfect day so we drove out there and it was wonderful.”

About 12 residents all went for the trip, which included a fish and chip lunch at the Lake Ferry Hotel.

Di says one resident who usually prefers to spend time by himself wanted to come along too.

“He used to be a surveyor for the council and he would walk and survey the area as part of his job – so he wanted to go and reminisce about that time.

“He enjoyed sitting inside and looking out at the lake.”

After lunch, they drove around the coast to collect driftwood and rocks to use in arts and craft activities back at the home.

Di says using items collected on their trip is also a helpful way to further spark memories of the day for the residents.

With the weather warming up, Di says there are more requests for outings and trips, including potential visits to Castlepoint and Greytown.

Kandahar Home and sister site, Kandahar Court, are both located in Lansdowne, Masterton. To find out more about the homes and the elder-centred Enliven philosophy, visit www.enlivencentral.org.nz. You can also call the homes directly on 06 370 0447 (Kandahar Home) or 06 370 0449 (Kandahar Court).
