Coombrae Home and Village residents love to keep fit

Focused on fitness at Feilding’s Coombrae Home.

Half an hour’s exercise a day is just what the doctor ordered if you want to lead a long and healthy life.

The residents of Enliven’s Coombrae Home and Village are very much onboard with this wisdom and put it into practice every morning six days a week.

“We have a group of more than 10 people who participate in the fitness class,” says team leader recreation Tracey Withers.

“They find the class brings opportunities for interaction with others which results in longer-term companionship as well as giving some extra meaning and purpose to their daily lives.”

The exercise routine participants enjoy has been designed for older people and they have the option to sit or stand during their workout.

The routine includes head to toe exercises which incorporate breathing, stretching, and strengthening.

“It’s become a really important part of their day. If for any reason we have to miss a session, I get some stick!” laughs Tracey.

Classic New Zealand songs accompany the exercises, some of which include a side-to-side rowing movement which stretches arms and shoulders and helps with core strength.

“Even those who don’t participate in the exercise component love to sit and watch and sing along,” says Tracey. “They’re exercising their voices and that’s important for their wellbeing.”
