A Place to Belong

The newly opened Kōwhai Community Day Programme at Kōwhainui is already making a big impact in Whanganui. Manager Trish Boswell says the programme is designed to support older people - particularly those living with memory loss or dementia - to stay connected, involved, and independent.

“This isn’t just about providing supervision,” Trish explains. “It’s a life-affirming experience centred on strengths, identity, and meaningful daily routines.”

Running three days a week at the newly refurbished Kōwhai Centre, the programme offers a wide range of activities like painting, sewing, gardening, puzzles, cooking, or simply enjoying a chat over the newspaper in a sunny lounge. Two qualified diversional therapists lead the sessions, adapting activities to suit the mood and interests of those attending. “We read the room and make sure people feel engaged and comfortable,” says Trish.

She believes the programme meets a growing need in the community. “Family caregivers are under immense pressure, often with little opportunity for respite. At the same time, people living with dementia can become very isolated. This programme offers companionship for participants, while giving whānau the peace of mind that their loved one is supported.”

The benefits are far-reaching: improved mood, reduced anxiety, and greater confidence to remain at home longer. The programme also fosters new community connections, including plans for intergenerational activities with local schools.

While other groups exist in Whanganui, Trish says Kōwhai is unique. “There are no other programmes to this extent; with a dedicated space and structure focused on what people want from their day.”

Denise Skelsey is a regular attendee at the Kōwhai Centre and says the team, including Trish, Tina and Marlene, make it a very safe, fun place to be.

"One of the best things is you get to choose what you'd like to do. Activities include every type of game you could imagine: music, gentle exercise, and social outings," Denise says.

"If you're caring for someone and would like them looked after while you have time out, I can assure you your loved one will be very well cared for here”.

As this is a community programme, funding is available and there is no age restriction.
